5 Plants That Can Help Purify Indoor Air

Do you want to clear the air in your home or office? The solution: Get some green plants.

A recent study by researchers at the University of New York looked at common house plants and found that when it comes to removing harmful chemicals from the air, some are better than others.  Indoor air pollution can lead to symptoms called “sick-building syndrome,” such as headaches and fatigue. Toxic compounds emitted are gases from paints, formaldehyde from furniture and other compounds released from copiers, printers, cleaning supplies, and dry cleaned clothes, are often the cause. These toxic compounds are known as volatile organic compounds.

5 plants that help clean indoor air

Bromeliad (Guzmania lingulata)

bromeliad plant

Bromeliad is a spiky plant that works best at removing benzene (92%). Benzene is a toxic gas found in vehicle exhaust and cigarette smoke.  It is also effective at removing several volatile organic compounds.

Dracaena ( Dracaena frangas)

All five plants did a good job at removing acetone found in nail polish remover. The Dracena plant has trunk-like stems and shiny leaves which were found to remove more  compounds than any other plant tested (94% over a 12 hour study.)

Jade (Crassula argentea)

jade plant

Out of the five plants tested, the study found that this plant is easy to care.  Jade is a succulent and is also known as a friendship tree, lucky plant, or money tree. It is best at removing toluene (91%). Toluene is a strong smelling chemical often associated with paint thinners.

Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

spider plant

The spider plant is ranked number one for removing ethylbenzene (62%), p-Xylenes (92%), and o-Xylene (93%). These chemicals are found in inks, rubbers, adhesives, paints, and varnishes. Another benefit of the spider plant is that it is adaptable to many environments.

Caribbean Tree Cactus (Consolea falcata)

This cactus produces tiny flowers and grows well with lots of sunlight. This plant did not rate as well as the others in the study; however, it did remove more than 80% of chemicals such as ethylbenzene, p-Xylenes and acetone, and approximately 60% of benzene, toluene, and o-W=xylene.

Do You Want Safer Beauty Products?!

Hello everyone!!

I just received this email from the Environmental Working Group:

“In my 12 years at EWG, our team has uncovered hundreds of questionable chemicals lurking in your cosmetics. From formaldehyde in hair treatments to endocrine disruptors in nail polish and even lead in lipstick, it seems the list of dangerous ingredients lurking in everyday products is a long one.

The truth is we’re able to find those toxic chemicals because they’re ALLOWED in our personal care products. Current laws do nothing to stop companies from using toxic ingredients linked to cancer, infertility and birth defects. In fact, the last time these laws were updated was during the Great Depression.

But we can change that – right now. Sens. Feinstein and Collins are preparing to reintroduce the Personal Care Products Safety Act. This bill would finally ensure that the ingredients used in our cosmetics are safe.

This bill is long overdue, but we have real momentum now for change. It’s time for Congress to do its job and take action to protect Americans from dangerous ingredients in our cosmetics.

Join EWG and urge your senators to support the Personal Care Products Safety Act!

Here’s the good news: Major companies like Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Revlon and Beautycounter – they ALL want this legislation. That gives it a much better chance of getting passed.

And we need it. The average woman uses about 12 products, with more than 150 different ingredients, every day. None of those ingredients is required by the FDA to go through safety testing before being used. The current law is so weak, the government is powerless to ban questionable ingredients, including those linked to cancer, reproductive harm or severe allergies.

In fact, the FDA can’t even recall products we know are dangerous!

At EWG we’ve spent more than a decade helping consumers find out what’s in their cosmetics and how it may be affecting their health. But it shouldn’t be this hard! Consumers ought to be able to trust that products on store shelves are safe.

The Personal Care Products Safety Act could fix that, but we need your help to get it across the finish line.”

Please contact your senators right now and ask them to stand up for your health! Urge your senators to support real cosmetics safety reform!

Essential Oils Vs. Fragrance Oils

The other day I went to my local CVS to grab a few things and I came across the air freshener aisle.  I glanced at the essential oils.  Do you know that these essential oils are not essential oils?! They are fragrance oils. And these items come with a plugin diffuser!
glade use 1
Have you noticed that there are more ads on TV for these products?  What is sad is; because essential oils are so popular, people are deceived by these so-called essential oils.
It is not surprising that fragrance oils are being promoted so much these days.  Fragrance oils are cheaper to produce than quality therapeutic essential oils. There are, of course, some things in common between fragrance oils and therapeutic oils – the primary one being that they both produce aromas! Note: pure essential oils like rose are more expensive because it takes lots of rose petals to produce a high quality oil!
However, there are some things about fragrance oils you should be aware of -especially since they are so popular. Here are some key points to consider when purchasing so-called “natural” essential oils and fragrance oils.
1.  They are made with synthetic/artificial ingredients. Read the label.
2. Natural oils can be called “natural” when they contain 10% pure essential oil.
3. Fragrance oils and synthetic essential oils may clog or confuse the receptor sites of cells.
4. Fragrance oils and synthetic essential oils may have a depressing effect on the immune system.
5. Fragrance oils and synthetic essential oils may lead to headaches and stuffiness especially if you have allergies.
6. Fragrance oils and synthetic essential oils may cause dizziness or other side effects.
In contrast, quality therapeutic essential oils usually are organic or 100% pure.. These essential oils may help support wellness.
There is a big difference between fragrance grade oils and therapeutic grade or pure essential oils. And this difference is worth pointing out since fragrance oils are being promoted so much these days. It’s easy to assume if something smells good or has “essential oils” in its name that it must be quality stuff. But this is often not the case. So, be aware of what you’re buying.
To your health and happiness,
Shaline

11 Ways to Boost Your Immune System for Optimal Health

Do you feel sluggish?  Do you feel pain? Maybe your lymphatic system is blocked.

This next blog post is a continuation of my last post…I will elaborate more on Dr. John Douillard’s teachings. Dr. Douillard is author of the Three-Season Diet.

Three Season Diet

The lymphatic or lymph system is a complex network of fluid-filled tubes that carries away toxins filtered through lymph nodes, which trap and neutralize harmful substances. Yet for the lymphatic system to move and deactivate toxins, our muscles have to be pumping.

The lymphatic system is a system made up of glands, lymph nodes, spleen, thymus gland, and tonsils.  It bathes our body’s cells and carries the body’s cellular sewage away from the tissues to the blood, where it can be filtered by two of the body’s main detoxification organs: the liver and kidneys.  This sewage is made up of chemical processes such as over-the-counter and prescriptions drugs, cigarettes, airborne pollutants, food additives, pesticides, and other toxins.

If you are feeling pain from injuries, excess weight, or pain disorders such as arthritis bursitis, headaches, and other pain, a sluggish lymphatic system may be playing a role.

In the case of chronic pain, post-surgery, or pregnancy—where little movement is present—blockage of the lymphatic system can compromise immunity and lead to further health problems due to an overwhelming buildup of toxins.

Here are 11 ways you can get your lymph flowing smoothly.

1. Take deep breathes.  Your lymph system relies on the pumping action of deep breathing to help it transport toxins into the blood before they are detoxified by your liver. So take a deep breathe of oxygen through your nose and breathe out the toxins from your mouth.

2. Movement.  Exercise ensures the lymph system flows properly.

3. Drink plenty of water.  Lymph fluid cannot flow properly without adequate water. Add some fresh lemon juice to help ensure the water is readily absorbed by your cells.

4. Eliminate soda, sports drinks, and so-called fruit “juices.”

5. Eat more raw fruit on an empty stomach.  The enzymes and acids in fruit are powerful lymph cleansers.  Eat them on an empty stomach for best digestion and maximum lymph-cleansing benefits.  Most fruits digest within a half hour or so. Note: If you have acid reflux or digestive issues, eat fruit with other foods.

6. Eat plenty of green vegetables.  Eating plenty of greens to get adequate chlorophyll helps purify your blood and lymph.

7. Eat raw, unsalted nuts and seeds.  Eating more nuts and seeds to power up your lymph with adequate fatty acids.  Choose from walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, macadamias, Brazil nuts, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds.

8. Add herbal teas to give your lymph a boost.  Drink herbal teas with astragalus, echinacea, goldenseal, pokeroot, or wild indigo root tea.  Note: consult an herbalist or a naturopath before drinking these teas with medication.

9. Dry skin brush before showering.  Use a natural bristle brush.  Brush your dry skin in circular motions, upward from the feet to the torso and from the fingers to the chest. Work in the same direction as your lymph flows – toward the heart.

10. Alternative hot and cold shower for several minutes. The heat dilates the blood vessels and the cold causes them to contract.

11. Get a massage.  Studies show that a massage can push up to 78 percent of stagnant lymph back into circulation.  Massage frees trapped toxins.

Other suggestions: maintain a healthy diet by eating whole clean foods and add meditation into your routine.

To your health and happiness,

Shaline
