6 Ways to Support Immune Health: Does CBD Help?

Amid what is happening around the world with the Coronavirus, I wanted to re-share this blog post with you.

This is a stress time due to the uncertainty.  This excess stress can weaken your immune system, thus making us more susceptible to falling ill.  Fortunately, there are several preventative measures you can take to make sure you’re doing the best to maintain overall well-being.

CBD Health Benefits for the Immune System

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is responsible for regulating most functions in the human body. One of these functions is our immune response. Cannabinoids (like CBD) interact with our ECS. When our ECS is active, it helps to aid our body in bringing itself back into balance (homeostasis). When our body is in balance, it is more likely to make sure proper immune function and regulation is occurring.

The immune system is extremely complex, and there is still much to be learned about it. We are excited to see more research being conducted about the relationship between CBD and the immune system. For now, though, it appears the ECS and CBD are very much involved in the maintenance of a properly functioning immune response.

Due to the complex nature of the immune system, there are many misconceptions when it comes to staying well as the weather changes. Let’s bust some of those myths before jumping into the best preventative measures you can take to keep sickness at bay.

Busting Myths About Immune Health

Many of us have heard the phrase ‘put a coat on or you’ll catch a cold!’ Although we may associate sickness with colder weather, research suggests our increase in sickness during the winter months is most likely due to spending more time indoors (to avoid the cold) and spending more time in close contact with others who may pass a virus to us.

Having busted this common misconception, let’s dive into some effective, preventative measures to keep you healthy.

  1. Manage stress

woman stress

Stress is the single most important factor you can manage to avoid weakening your immune system. Stress wears down our immune system rapidly, making us more likely to fall ill when we are exposed to germs.

It’s not uncommon to be stressed out, it can be a stressful time! You can help mitigate this stress by meditating, indulging in regular exercise, and practicing mindfulness. There are many various ways to manage stress, so whichever option works best based on you and your schedule is great! We’re not so concerned HOW you manage stress, we’re merely advocating for you to do so!

  1. Prioritize sleep (or make it better!)

woman sleeping

Our bodies repair themselves while we sleep – which is why it is so crucial to make sure we’re getting enough quality sleep. When we skip out on our regular amounts of sleep, the number of infection-fighting antibodies and cells in our bodies are reduced.

Supplementing with a CBD supplement before bed will help you relax and therefore get into a deeper sleep. There are several things you can do to ensure you get a better night’s rest, and it is in your immune system’s best interest to get quality sleep when you can.

  1. Support your body with herbs and supplements

herbs

It is recommended using a supplement as just that – a supplement to an already healthy lifestyle! Things, like sleeping well and managing stress, will always make a more significant impact than a supplement, but we listed a few supplements that can help boost your immunity nonetheless.

CBD

As mentioned before, CBD can be a powerful tool to help maintain balance in your body. Including CBD into your daily routine will be all-around beneficial – and will especially aid in activating your ECS and keeping you balanced this winter.

Medicinal Mushrooms (Chaga, Reishi)

Mushrooms are widely used in Eastern medicine and have been known to act as a powerful immune sidekick. Source high-quality reishi mushroom powder and try mixing it into your morning latte.

Echinacea

Echinacea has been shown to increase the number of white blood cells, which helps to fight off colds or infection. Try an herbal echinacea spray or a bag of tea that contains dried echinacea.

  1. Load up on healthy foods

fruit smoothie bowl

Vitamins can help an infection from even happening in the first place. If you are eating a healthy, balanced diet, then you should not need to take a supplement – the vitamins are already in the food we eat! We know there are plenty of treats around this time of year and we are not suggesting you don’t indulge (because we sure do!), but that doesn’t mean you have to completely ditch your healthy lifestyle altogether. You can still eat healthy meals in between your holiday get-togethers, and squeeze in workouts when able.

Vitamin D

Due to the decreased amount of sunshine, vitamin D is an important supplement to add to your regime. You can either purchase a high-quality vitamin D supplement or look for fortified milk and cereals.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is probably the most well-known immune booster. You can get your dose of vitamin C by eating citrus (like oranges, grapefruit, or lemon), bell peppers, kale, and broccoli.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that will help the body fight infection. You can get vitamin E from nuts (like sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts, or hazelnuts), avocados, mango, and kiwi!

Zinc

Zinc is a mineral that keeps the immune system strong and aids in healing. You can find zinc in legumes, nuts, seeds, and soy products.

Prioritize eating a salad packed with vegetables, drinking a green juice, or even making your own vegetable broth before your next holiday get-together. Your immune system will thank you!

  1. Stay hydrated

water lime

Making sure you stay hydrated aids your body in eliminating toxins and other unwanted bacteria. Soda, alcohol, and sugary drinks are not substitutes for water; if you need to, try herbal teas or add flavorings to your water to make sure you are getting enough.

As a guideline, to be properly hydrated, our bodies need ½ of our body weight in ounces per day to stay hydrated. If you weigh 150lbs then 75oz of water daily is what you need. We know drinking that much water isn’t always possible, but 35oz of water daily is better than zero. Do your best!

  1. Wash your hands

person washing hands

One of the easiest tips of all, but we had to mention it! Thoroughly wash your hands, especially before handling food or after being in an environment with a lot of germs. (like grocery stores, doctor’s offices, hospitals, etc.)

These tips can help you avoid sickness anytime. This article is written to  show you how easy it is to integrate a wellness lifestyle into your already busy schedule. Wellness is a choice that everyone can make!

Stay well!

CBD Oil For Smooth, Blooming, And More Beautiful Skin

CBD beautiful-beauty-blouse

According to who you talk to, cannabis can either be the miracle cure for almost any ailment in existence or it can be the work of the devil that will chew you up and spit out a complete drug addict. It’s interesting to consider how a plant became one of the most talked-about topics in history, and even more enthralling when you come to learn of its medicinal benefits, some of which have already been scientifically proven. Over the past few years, we have seen more funding being pumped into the research of alternative medicines, namely CBD, and the passage of the farm bill last year means that hemp-derived products are now completely legal to purchase and consume.

CBD oil has stolen the spotlight and graced the pages of several health and wellness publications and more dermatologists and luxury skincare brands are including CBD as a primary ingredient in their decadent lotions and potions and the medical industry is also becoming more open to the use of CBD to help treat issues like pain and anxiety.

If you are reaching an age where spending significant amounts of money on preserving your smooth and youthful skin is the norm, then CBD oil could be the perfect investment for you. It is rich in antioxidants, vitamins to help slow the signs of aging and it also gets rid of redness and swelling thanks to its strong anti-inflammatory properties. CBD is one of the biggest buzzwords in the beauty industry right now and it’s only a matter of time before the popularity of this natural elixir overtakes that of treatments like Botox and peeling.

While the idea of using oil on your face is frankly rather cringing worthy, CBD oil is incredibly beneficial and it helps lock in all of the moisture and hydration your skin needs to be glowing and healthy and even if your skin is a little on the oily side, CBD oil will still be beneficial to you as it helps regulate the amount of sebum you produce resulting in clearer pores and less greasy looking skin.

The Benefits Of CBD Oil For Your Skin

You are probably sick of hearing about CBD’s powerful ability to relieve chronic pain, as well as helping those suffering from extreme anxiety to cope with life, but using CBD oil in skincare is still a relatively uncharted territory when it comes to media exposure. With regard to its skin benefits, its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties hold great potential in the treatment of skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne, and eczema, and it also protects against oxidative stress, meaning you might be able to stave off those dreaded crows feet and wrinkles for a little while longer. If you have sensitive skin and redness, or irritated skin, that anti-inflammatory aspect is especially fabulous to provide some pain relief, ease inflammation, and reduce your redness to improve skin health.

CBD Regulates Oil Production

Many of you are probably thinking that using oil as a facial moisturizer is a recipe for an acne-laden disaster, but rest assured it really does work to hydrate your skin without making it dirty or greasy regardless of skin types. It’s not like using coconut oil or olive oil, which can be way too moisture ridden. Your pores won’t get clogged with CBD products, which is always a bonus.

Anti-Aging Benefits

Aside from soothing and moisturizing, CBD oil provides you with a load of anti-aging qualities in your skincare routine that will leave your skin feeling fresh and smooth. External free radicals like pollution and toxins that cause us to age way quicker than we should be are kept at bay thanks to CBD strengthening the skin’s defense system and stopping these nasties getting in. So it can help to maintain your skin tone and erase those fine lines and wrinkles that we all know and love.

Possible Side Effects of Using CBD Oil

Buckle up and get ready for some good news. Early studies looking at the use of CBD have revealed that it carries only a few minor side effects, which is excellent news for those of us who are willing to go to any lengths to preserve our aging bodies. The studies in question examined the safety of CBD in adults and the majority of participants tolerated it extremely well with no side effects other than minor ones like diarrhea and fatigue.

With regards to including CBD in our skincare routines, there has not been any research indicating that it aggravates the skin in any way. In fact, studies have deemed it to be safe for topical use.

With that said, it’s still a good idea to proceed with caution when buying CBD oil for topical use as you have to make sure that the product you are buying is not secretly packed full of additives and toxins that will ultimately counteract all of the good work the CBD could be doing. Look for products that have a high concentration of CBD and are made using only natural ingredients and that also send each batch of oil to a third party approved lab for thorough testing.

How to Use CBD Oil for Best Results

If you are already getting excited about the beauty benefits that CBD can offer, then there are several ways to get started using it right away. Do your research and buy from brands who have worked hard to earn themselves a good reputation and who pride themselves on transparency when it comes to ingredients and faqs.

Many people prefer to take CBD oil as a sublingual tincture as this is one of the quickest ways of experiencing the benefits, but when it comes to your skin, the topical application seems to have a more potent effect as it targets a localized area. You can add CBD oil to your existing face cream or you can use it on its own- the choice is entirely your own! Adding a couple of drops of lavender essential oil to the oil you plan to use on your face will also help mask the funky smell that good quality oils have, as the terpenes that give your skin extra nourishment are known for their distinctive weed smell.

Ultimately, keeping it simple always seems to work best in life, so directly applying CBD oil to your skin each day requires minimal hassle and could result in all of the benefits.

Skin Deep: Your Ultimate Guide to Topical CBD

As the world embraces CBD for its medicinal value, CBD product manufacturers and other health professionals continue to discover more and more ways to take advantage of its health and medicinal benefits. This offers consumers more options and allows them to choose the method most convenient for them. Methods include oils, tinctures, edibles, patches, vape oil, and topicals in the form of creams, lotions, balms, and more.

Topical CBD, unlike other CBD products, doesn’t enter the bloodstream but is no less effective. Depending on the issue you’re trying to address, it could even work faster than say, tinctures and edibles, which are ingested, and work from inside the body. Because topical CBD is applied right to the skin and exactly where it’s needed, the cannabinoid is absorbed directly into the affected area so it’s able to work faster, providing quick relief.

Whether you’re new to cannabidiol and deciding which product is for you, or you’re just exploring other options, we’ve got everything you need to know about topical CBD right here.

what-is-topical-cbd-1

What is Topical CBD? (and How Does it Work?)

Topical CBD is a product infused with cannabinoids, which are compounds found in the cannabis plant, and designed to be applied externally, onto the skin. It is known to provide quick localized relief without ingestion. Since topical CBD it is applied externally, it only affects the surface layers of the body. This is all it needs though.

Inside each of our bodies is an endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is a network of receptors which can be found in the brain, nervous system, and other parts of your body. The ECS is also in our skin and is the key to how topical CBD works.

Topical CBD works by interacting with the ECS receptor points in our skin. When these receptors are activated, they start to seek out “stressed” receptors and bring them back into balance. When we have stressed out receptors, we notice symptoms ranging from aches and pains to general soreness and stiffness.

Now that you know a little about how CBD works topically, let’s discuss the various types of skincare products it can be found in.

How are CBD Topicals Made?

“The most important thing about the salve is that each ingredient was carefully chosen for its properties; even the essential oils, down to our CBD source.

What are the Different Types of Topical CBD?

Topical CBD has essentially three different consistencies: creams and lotions, balms and salves, and oil. Here’s how they are different from each other.

CBD Cream and Lotion

cbd-topical-cream-lotion

CBD cream and lotion fall under the same category because while creams are slightly thicker than lotions, they have similar consistency and texture. These products make use of a small amount of water, along with moisturizing agents like shea butter, aloe vera, and other nutrients. These are formulated to moisturize and restore the skin barrier.

CBD Salve and Balm

cbd-topical-salve-balm

Unlike creams and lotions, CBD salve and balm products do not use water, hence the more solid consistency. They are typically made with beeswax and fatty oils combined with CBD. They are thick and harder to spread throughout the skin compared to creams and lotions, therefore, these products are best used on specific, targeted areas that need relief.

Topical CBD Oil

cbd-topical-oil-b

Topical CBD oil often has other ingredients like olive oil or coconut oil. They are also formulated with other essential oils, vitamins, and minerals. They are the easiest to spread over large areas of the body and are best used as a massage oil to relieve pain and give your skin an over-all relaxing sensation.

How Do you Apply Topical CBD Products?

  1. Make sure to clean the affected area prior to application. It’s best to wash it with soap and water to rid the spot of any other product residues, dirt, or natural oils as these could affect your skin’s absorption of the product.
  2. Take a good amount of the product and massage it onto the problem areas. Leave it for a few minutes so it’s absorbed into the skin before covering it with a bandage or putting garments over it.
  3. Use as frequently as needed to get the best results. CBD products don’t get you high, plus topical CBD doesn’t really enter the bloodstream so it won’t have any effects to the rest of your body.
  4. Wash your hands when you’re done. CBD topicals have other active ingredients and while they provide relief to painful areas of your body, it could sting when it gets to your eyes and other parts of the body.

What are the Most Common Uses of Topical CBD?

CBD has been proven to have anti-inflammatory benefits, and because one of the most common causes of pain is inflammation, using topical CBD can provide relief and relaxation.

Sun Burn

Overexposure to the sun’s rays is what triggers sunburns. The affected skin then turns red and irritated, and in severe cases, it can cause swelling and blisters. These are signs of inflammation. CBD creams and lotions can help reduce the pain and inflammation and at the same time helps rehydrate the burnt skin.

Arthritis Pain

Arthritis is the inflammation of one or more of your joints, most commonly associated with aging. It causes moderate to severe pain, swelling, and stiffness, and could even limit your ability to move the affected body part. Topical CBD can help with the symptoms, according to a study made in 2015. It concludes that topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain-related behaviors and inflammation without evident side-effects.

Muscle Pain

A lot of athletes have been using CBD to speed up muscle recovery after rigorous training. They often take it orally, but topical CBD has similar effects. CBD creams, salves, and balms can help relax the muscles and reduce inflammation and the physical discomforts caused by intense physical activities.

Other studies claim that topical CBD may prove helpful for other skin issues like acne, eczema, psoriasis, and more.

What are the Different Factors to Consider When Choosing a Topical CBD?

If you’re new to topical CBD and trying to figure out which product will work for you, it’s best to take a look at the different factors and understand how they come into play with each product. Here are a few things you need to consider.

Ingredients

There would often be other ingredients in topicals apart from CBD and they’re not always the same. Different manufacturers use different ingredients and once you know what you want to use the topical for, you have to make sure that the added ingredients in it do not counter your desired effect.

For example, if you hope to treat skin issues by using CBD cream but the formulation includes other comedogenic ingredients that could block your pores, it could do more harm than good. Always read up and do your research.

Concentration

The potency of topical CBD affects its effectiveness so you might want to check if a product’s potency is strong enough to make it past the skin so that it can work on providing relief to the affected area. Always opt for high-quality topicals that are highly concentrated to get the best results.

Consistency

Different consistencies of topical CBD may vary in effectiveness, and depending on what you want to use it for, one product may be better for you than the other. For example, balms and salves are thicker than lotions and creams and may work better because its thickness makes it easier for the skin to absorb it. On the other hand, if you have dry skin and need a little bit of hydration, you might want to go for lotions and creams as they contain moisturizing agents that could ease the dryness. It’s always a good idea to match the products to your specific needs.

Manufacturer

Make sure you source CBD skincare products from manufacturers you can trust. Legit CBD companies have high-quality products and provide you with an accurate chemical breakdown of everything that they offer, allowing you to make an informed decision when it comes to choosing the kind of topical that’s right for you.

Final Thoughts

Topical CBD for skin, like other CBD products, is a great alternative to over-the-counter medicines. Studies have proven their anti-inflammatory benefits without the side effects that traditional, prescription medications often have.

To maximize the benefits of topical CBD, know exactly what your problem areas are—it’s always good to have a specific target. Then, do your research so you know how to choose the best consistency and the exact product that can address it. Finally, observe best practices when using it.

CBDa: More Than Just the Precursor to CBD?

CBDa-front-cover

Would you consider eating a hemp leaf? It sounds very natural, but early research suggests that compounds in the raw cannabis plant may provide distinct health benefits. One of these compounds is cannabidiolic acid (CBDa), the precursor to the well-known cannabidiol (CBD) compound.

In a natural state, the hemp plant contains over 85 active compounds called cannabinoids. These compounds are secreted in a sticky resin through the trichomes (glands) of the cannabis plant.

When the hemp plant is processed, cannabinoids can be changed or removed. The final hemp product can contain one cannabinoid or all the available cannabinoids depending on how it is manufactured.

Environmental factors such as heat, air, and light can also affect what cannabinoids are present in the plant. Cannabinoids levels will vary slightly between each plant—even those that are grown right next to one another!

With the amount of emphasis that is placed on CBD, it may be surprising to learn that the raw hemp plant contains very little CBD. Instead, it contains an abundance of CBDa (the ratio is about 95% CBDa to 5% CBD at the highest.)

CBDA-precursor-cbd_2a

Through a process called decarboxylation, CBDa is heated to break down the acidic form. What is left is referred to as “activated” CBD (cannabinoids in their acidic form have been considered “inactive”.) CBDa also converts to CBD naturally by way of time and heat.

We are familiar with CBD because of its therapeutic potential. In the past, CBD has been viewed as the more “important” cannabinoid and manufacturers have intentionally converted CBDa into CBD. Today, most CBD products are decarboxylated and contain little CBDa.

CBDa: More Than Just the Precursor to CBD?

Researchers are finding the “inactive” status of CBDa may not be entirely accurate. The compound provides its own set of benefits that are still being uncovered.

As of now, there has been far less research on CBDa than CBD. So far, all studies are at the preclinical stage, meaning they are carried out on cell cultures or animal models. In preclinical studies, CBDa has been studied for the treatment of nausea, inflammation, and epilepsy. The results are significant enough that further research is being explored.

Like CBD, CBDa is non-intoxicating. However, CBDa is used by the body differently than CBD. Studies suggest that CBDa may not interact with the endocannabinoid system; rather, CBDa affects other non-endocannabinoid receptors and enzymes.

If you are interested in the specific benefits of CBDa, we suggest performing a quick Google search for the preclinical studies. As of now, FDA regulations prevent us from presenting the specifics regarding research.

CBDA-precursor-cbd_3

Which is Better: CBD or CBDa?

There is no one “best” cannabinoid; however, there are cannabinoids that have been more thoroughly studied. To determine which cannabinoids are best suited for your situation, we recommend researching the benefits of each.

Oftentimes, it is a combination of cannabinoids that suit our bodies best. During what is known as the entourage effect, compounds such as cannabinoids and terpenes work with one another to produce an effect greater than the compound alone. It is suggested that taking CBD and CBDa together may provide more benefit than taking the compounds alone.

As of now, research is attentive to CBD and the market will reflect such. As more research is conducted on CBDa, we predict to see a greater emphasis on this cannabinoid.

CBD’s Anti-Aging Benefits Examined

Originally posted by Kim Torres on Sunday Scaries

Love it or hate it; there is nothing like a revolving door of skin care products. Tea tree oil! Coconut oil! Try this! Do that! Don’t you dare use that on your precious skin! No matter who you are, you have probably felt the pressure to take care of your skin, and at face value (no pun intended) all of that is good and well. Our skin is important! As the largest organ in our bodies, what we use to take care of ourselves does matter and does make a difference. But, if you can’t keep up with the trends (I mean really, who can?), it can get overwhelming quickly as products roll in and out of the spotlight.

CBD Is Here to Stay

CBD oil is no different — except, it is in the spotlight and has no intention of giving it up. CBD has been hot in the health and wellness industry for a couple of years, and it does not look like it is going anywhere. Regaled for its wide range and variety of benefits, CBD has been used to treat all sorts of ailments, both internally and externally.

Remind me: What is CBD Again?

If you need a refresher, CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound that is extracted from the cannabis plant and is a type of hemp oil. This hemp extract is a non-psychoactive compound, which means that under no circumstances can it get you high. You may also be familiar with its similar-but-very-different cousin, THC, which stands for tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is psychoactive and is the compound that gets people high when using marijuana. They look similar in structure but are completely different in how they impact the human body.

How does CBD Work?

The human body has an endocannabinoid system, which regulates your mood, your memory, the nervous system, your immune system and hormones, and so much more. The Endocannabinoid system has two receptors, CB1 and CB2. When you use a product like CBD, it positively affects the CB2 receptor. For this reason, CBD is often used for anxiety, Parkinson’s disease, or as a powerful antioxidant.

How can I take CBD?

CBD can be used in a variety of ways. It can be taken orally in via CBD gummies or CBD candy, sublingually with a couple of drops of tincture under the tongue, or topically with a cream or lotion. If you take it orally or sublingually, it will go straight to the receptors. If you take it topically, it will only impact the specific location you put it on. Fascinating, right?

What makes CBD so Great for Skin Care?

In the skincare world, CBD has great anti-inflammation and antioxidant properties, making it an incredible resource for healing and renewing the skin. You can find CBD in mascara, in lip gloss, in facial scrubs, bath bombs, creams, lotions, salves… you name it, and someone is selling it. But what makes it so incredible and stand out from all the other options? We’re so glad you asked! Keep reading to learn how these properties can breathe life into your skin care routine and ward off wrinkles like a champ.

Why does our skin age in the first place?

When we talk about our skin aging, what do we mean? What is going on? Well, after we turn 20, our skin begins producing 1% less collagen each year. Collagen is a property in our bodies that helps keep our skin tight and bright if you will. It causes our skin to become less firm, more delicate, and as moisture goes down, our skin becomes drier and duller as time goes on.

What else affects our skin?

However, the biological age of our skin cells is not nearly as concerning as the environmental impact as we spend more and more cumulative years outside in the sun and the elements, the quicker the health of our skin declines. If we are not actively fighting against our skin’s decline, we’re probably contributing to it. (This is why using safe, natural products are so important! Using chemical filled lotions and makeup doesn’t help either.) As time goes on, our skin begins to show wear and tear of years of sun, chemicals, and declining biological processes.

But don’t worry! You’re not helpless, and it doesn’t have to be nearly as depressing as it sounds. CBD products help restore vitality into the skin and can regulate and manage the effects of everyday life, so they aren’t as damaging.

What will it do?

CBD is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. What does that mean? Well, lots of things! And each of these benefits will help to fight against and reduce the signs of the skin aging process. First, it will help cut down on redness in your skin. That’s a start! It can also help reduce irritation and help regulate your hormonal systems and oil production. Too much, or too little oil, can prompt acne breakouts, so regulating your oil production will help your skin get into a rhythm. CBD has been known to slow down the aging process. CBD can also visibly reduce fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and generally, help your skin look younger and healthier. It will hold on to moisture, slow down collagen loss, and help your skin look and feel firm. What a list of benefits!

Where should I start?

There are a ton of different options when it comes to incorporating CBD into your morning skincare routine. You can start with a lotion or primer, or even visit a dermatologist for a CBD facial. Whatever you decide, you’re in for a treat. And as a reminder, give yourself several weeks before you determine whether a product is working for you, as products work differently for various skin types. Like any other skin care or anti-aging products, whenever you integrate something new into your routine, it may take a while for your skin to get adjusted and to see positive results. You may even experience an acne flare-up because sometimes things must get worse before they get better. In any case, try using a product on the inside of your wrist before you put it on your face, to make sure you don’t have a sensitivity or an allergy. Then, give yourself a few weeks to try a product before you determine whether it is helpful. You’ve got this!

Hugs,

Shaline

Anxiety and the Endocannabinoid System

Anxiety is a normal coping mechanism; however, in excess, it can be detrimental. More than just a situational response, anxiety disorders are characterized by a persistent and oftentimes irrational dread of everyday situations which can interfere with daily activities.

Forty million U.S. adults are affected by an anxiety-related disorder; however, the prevalence of these disorders should not diminish their impact.

Excessive anxiety is a central symptom of several neuropsychiatric disorders including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Anxiety is a complex disorder that can develop through various factors including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events.

Anxiety and Emotional Response

Anxiety is our body’s response to an emotional situation. Biologically, anxiety activates our “fight or flight” response to warn us of potential threats.

During such time, norepinephrine and cortisol flood our system to boost to perception, reflexes, and speed. These chemicals increase the heart rate, blood flow to the muscles, and air flow. With chronic anxiety, the response is never deactivated, and the physical and emotional effects of anxiety remain.

anxiety-endocannabinoid-system_1

Anxiety and the Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays an integral role in regulating emotional response.

Specifically, the ECS supports nerve activity that determines our response to emotional or aversive events.

An Introduction to the ECS

As discussed in a previous blog, the endocannabinoid system is a biological system responsible for maintaining homeostasis. The ECS is composed of endocannabinoids, degradative enzymes, and cannabinoid receptors. Endocannabinoids such as anandamide (“the bliss molecule”) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2AG) are synthesized, or created, by our body on demand in response to an imbalance. They interact with the cannabinoid receptors to direct the body back to proper functioning.

CB1 Receptors and Anxiety

CB1 receptors, which are primarily located on nerve endings, are one of the two major cannabinoid receptors.

Studies have found the activation of the CB1 receptor produces anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects.

When discussing conditioned fear, the effect of CB1 receptor activation is complex; however, CB1 receptor activation can reduce fear and prevent the activation of existing memories from the past. Additionally, CB1 receptor activation protects against the adverse effects of chronic stress, which can lead to anxiety. For this reason, CB1 receptor activation has been studied for anxiolytic drug development.

Endocannabinoids activate the CB1 receptor; therefore, a higher level of endocannabinoids can be beneficial for those with anxiety-related disorders. Additionally, chemicals that inhibit the FAAH enzyme from breaking down anandamide increase endocannabinoid availability and are also being studied for their anxiolytic effects.

Living with Anxiety

There are many ways to manage anxiety; however, less than 40% of those with an anxiety disorder seek treatment. Still today, there is a stigma surrounding mental illness that discourages those struggling from seeking help. We can help end the stigma of mental illness by having open conversations about mental health, encouraging mental health education, and showing compassion to those with a mental illness.

If you or a loved one is struggling with an anxiety disorder, we encourage you to learn more about the disorder and the options for treatment.

5 Ways That Stress Affects Your Period

Modern life is full of stressful situations and triggers that can negatively affect our mood. And, once a month, most women have to juggle all of the emotions that invade our heads and hearts in the lead up to our menstrual periods. How stress affects your period is quite difficult to assess. However, untreated stress, combined with increased hormone levels, can wreak havoc in our daily lives, as well as cause us to suffer from other mental health issues like insomnia, loss of appetite and anxiety. In fact, chronic stress and anxiety are so closely related that it is easy to mistake temporary stress for a chronic anxiety disorder.

woman model

Having a regular cycle when it comes to our menstruation is actually really important to women’s health. Women tend to plan important events like holidays, birth control (pregnancy), and even important work meetings around their monthly period, as let’s face it: most of us can turn into monsters if our buttons are pushed during that time of the month. So, when you are just about to board the plane for your yearly dream vacation in the Bahamas, the last thing you need is for your period to turn up. Yet it happens far more often than you think, which means that managing your stress and anxiety can usually rectify an irregular cycle.

Here are the five primary ways that stress affects your period and, more importantly, what you can do about it!

A Delay in Ovulation

When you are stressed in the lead up to ovulation, it makes is really difficult for certain hormones to be triggered and released on schedule. This will result in delayed ovulation, meaning your period will not be on time or predictable. The main problem with delayed ovulation is that it puts a huge spanner in the works when it comes to planning events around your period. In addition, this can lead to further stress, as you will probably start worrying that something is wrong and before you know it, you have ended up in a vicious cycle of anxiety. Delayed ovulation also poses a significant challenge to women who are planning to get pregnant, especially if they have struggled with fertility issues in the past.

A Longer Cycle

No one wants their period to last longer than is absolutely necessary, but this is exactly what can happen as a side effect of stress. When you are going through delayed ovulation, you will unfortunately likely have to endure a longer cycle than usual and you could also experience a heavier flow. The onset of your next cycle would also be late, so you would essentially be left guessing as to how long your period will last and when it will actually turn up. In today’s uncertain times, we certainly don’t need to be adding more unpredictable and stressful events into our lives!

Your Period Stops Entirely

Stress can have a powerful effect on the menstrual cycle including the amount of bleeding, the level of cramps, and, in some cases, your period could stop altogether. This is more common if you are dealing with a reduced appetite as a result of stress or anxiety, as being underweight can also cause your period to stop.

You Will Not Ovulate

While you will still bleed each month, you won’t actually be ovulated. This can be a huge issue if you are trying to conceive, as it may look like you have your period as usual, yet you will not be able to get pregnant. One of the most reliable ways to figure out, whether you are ovulating or not, is to chart your cervical mucus to see if it peaks or not; if it doesn’t, then you might not be ovulating and you should consult a physician to rectify the situation and obtain professional advice.

Your PMS Gets Worse

Throwing stress and anxiety into the mix of fluctuating hormones and mood swings isn’t exactly a recipe for success. Many women struggle with PMS and sometimes it gets so bad that it can result in heavy menstrual bleeding, anxiety attacks, and bouts of depression. If you have noticed that your PMS has got a lot worse recently, then you need to take a serious look at the stress levels and triggers in your life in order to be able to restore normality.

How to Manage Stress the Natural Way

Aside from affecting our period, stress can greatly affect many other aspects of our lives in a negative way. This is why it is of utmost importance to take steps to ensure that you have your stress under control. Regardless of how old you are, you should never underestimate the fact that stress is usually the root cause of a wide range of serious medical conditions, which include:

  • Hypertension
  • Increased risk of stroke
  • Increased risk of heart attack
  • Depression
  • Insomnia

There are also many more issues that are not always so apparent.

Thankfully, you are not alone and many women around the world have had great success managing and eliminating stress from their lives by using the following tool to help them live a more harmonious life.

CBD Oil for Stress

Based on recent news, it seems that this natural tincture is capable of treating virtually any illness on the planet. And while there will be some exaggerations and also skepticism with regards to its efficacy, many people have been able to significantly reduce stress and anxiety via the use of cannabis oil. It is now entirely legal for medical use across the U.S., although it must only contain very low levels of THC (the compound of cannabis that makes you high) in certain states.

A Quick Word on Getting High: CBD Oil DOES NOT Get You High

When you use CBD rich oil for therapeutic purposes, the cannabinoids present will cancel out the psychoactive effects. So, essentially you can enjoy all of the healing properties of the marijuana plant, without the disruption of being stoned and feeling as though you just want to stare at the ceiling all day.

Not only does nature’s miracle herb manage the symptoms of stress and anxiety for you, but it also works to fix other issues like insomnia and period pain. Certain strains will even help you to control the monthly munchies that many women seem to get during the time of their period.

Final Thoughts

CBD oil is an incredibly potent remedy for stress, but you have to form a partnership with it, in order to experience the maximum benefits. What I mean is that a degree of self-healing will also come from your own willpower and, of course, your lifestyle. If you are dealing with your stress by downing three bottles of wine every night before chowing down on a KFC, then you are subconsciously counteracting anything positive that you are doing for your body. Any medicine—be it pharmaceutical or natural—should be complemented with an active, healthy lifestyle. Above all, however, if you are concerned about your health in any way, you should visit your doctor.

How to Take Hemp Oil Orally

One of the most common ways to get CBD into your system is oral consumption. It is a familiar method that is quick and efficient. There are a few different ways on how to take hemp oil orally, such as tinctures, edibles, or capsules. Understanding how to use each is simple but pivotal to the product’s effectiveness.

What Are my Options?

Tincture

A tincture is a liquid supplement that is taken sublingually (under the tongue). Typically, tinctures have a dropper top that is used for administration. In addition to hemp oil, these drops often include a base oil such as grapeseed oil or coconut oil and flavoring. They are flavored to make the hemp taste slightly more palatable. However, some prefer the taste of hemp and there are natural varieties available.

To use a tincture: first, shake the bottle to mix the ingredients. Often times, the ingredients separate; shaking the product ensures a consistent serving. With the dropper top, fill the pipette with oil and then dispense the oil under the tongue. The amount of oil will depend on your specific serving size (see How Much Do I Take?below). Hold the serving under the tongue for 60-90 seconds. Swallow the remaining product, followed by your choice of liquid if desired. While this process is recommended 1-2 times daily, your frequency of use may vary.

Pure Extract

Pure hemp extracts are extracted right from the hemp plant and contain no additives. They have a much thicker consistency than tinctures and are dispensed out of an oral syringe. The color and consistency will vary depending on the variety you choose. This product is unflavored and may contain whole plant material, again, depending on the variety you choose.

To use a pure hemp extract, remove the cap from the end of the syringe. Dispense a rice-sized drop onto a spoon or directly into your mouth by pushing the end of the syringe. If you haven’t done so already, place the extract under your tongue. Hold it in your mouth for 60-90 seconds and then swallow the remaining product. Due to the hemp flavor, we recommend washing the product down with water or juice.

Edibles

Your option for edibles includes chocolates, chews, and lozenges. This variety of options allows many people to find something that will suit their taste. This type of oral supplement is particularly discreet in it looks just like candies or cough drops, so people won’t know that you are taking a dietary supplement. This allows you to take this supplement orally on the go or in the comfort of your own home.

Capsules

If you are already taking other supplements orally, adding another one might be a particularly easy way of adding it to your diet. These capsule supplements are taken the same way orally as any other capsule with water. These capsules come in different concentrations and are very easy to use when trying to find your perfect serving. When taking CBD hemp orally via capsule, you can be sure about exact servings due to the perfectly portioned oils and gel caps.

How Much Do I Take?

With hemp oil, there is not a one-size-fits-all serving size. What works for some may not work for others. The best practice is to start with the serving size on the package. If after a week you are not seeing the results you are looking for, increase the serving size for another week. Continue this method until your desired results are achieved.

CBD and Essential Oils: A Few Mixes You Can Try

In recent years, we have seen the rise of natural products storming the mainstream media. In particular, medical marijuana and CBD products have risen but, most recently, essential oils have hit the headlines. Those who have had zero success treating anxiety or sleep disorders with pharmaceutical medications are finally seeing positive results primarily via the use of CBD oil and, most recently, essential oils. We have all heard of coconut oil, olive oil, and lavender oil working wonders for aromatherapy and possibly even the likes of copaiba essential oil. But what about hemp seed oil or the benefits of CBD oil or even a combination with other essential oils?

With the world in crisis over environmental issues paired with a growing awareness of the harm that toxic medications can do when used for prolonged periods of time, natural medicines and supplements are taking center stage and people are now flocking to give natural remedies a try.

Using CBD with Essential Oils for a Health Boost

As with cannabis and hemp, essential oils have been used for thousands of years for therapeutic purposes, as has the cannabis plant (before it was banned). And while you do not traditionally ingest them to enjoy the benefits they can offer, they can still be used in conjunction with CBD oil, or cannabidiol oil, to effectively supercharge your healing experience. CBD-infused topical balms that contain pure essential oils are becoming increasingly popular, especially among those suffering from skin conditions or pain. And while neither CBD oil nor essential oils can be classified as a medicine, hundreds of thousands of individuals worldwide swear by their own mixes of the two tinctures for ultimate relief and healing.

In this article, we will be taking a look at the best mixes you can try, depending on the condition you are struggling with.

Lavender: A Powerful Sleep Aid

One of the primary reasons that otherwise healthy people are turning to CBD is because of insomnia. Nobody wants to have to deal with a hectic job on a poor night’s sleep and CBD oil has been found to enhance your ability to fall asleep and, most importantly, stay asleep for the whole night. Lavender essential oil has also been used since as long as we can remember to promote relaxation and improve sleep, usually through topical application or via an infuser. Out of all of the essential oils available, lavender seems to be able to combat pretty much everything from stress and anxiety to eczema and sunburn and it is for this reason that it pairs perfectly when used alongside CBD. If you are currently using CBD balm to treat a skin condition, then try adding a few drops of pure lavender oil into the mix—not only will you smell great, you will feel great, too.

Lemon: The Energizer

Although most people associate CBD oil with sleep and relaxation, it can also be used to enhance mental clarity, concentration, and the overall improvement of your energy levels. Micro-dosing CBD is most effective when you need an energy boost and even more so when you add some lemon essential oil into the mix. Remember that only certain essential oils are safe to ingest but lemon oil is one of them. For convenience, you could add a couple of drops of organic lemon oil into your CBD tincture or, alternatively, you could go the completely natural route and boil a couple of lemon rinds in some distilled water and then drink it as your first beverage in the morning.

Eucalyptus-and-Jasmine

Eucalyptus and Jasmine: Anti-Anxiety

CBD has been hailed as having potent anxiolytic effects and a recent study has actually proven that it can successfully combat social anxiety and while it is perfectly capable of flying solo in order to treat feelings of stress and panic, if you combine with an essential oil such as jasmine or eucalyptus, the effect is thought to be faster acting and longer lasting, as reported by current users of this harmonious blend. Eucalyptus oil has a soothing effect, thanks to its powerful minty fresh smell and it also induces a sensation of clarity. When you consider how easy it is to lose yourself in the overwhelming sensation of an impending panic attack, you will likely agree that clarity is key when it comes to navigating an internal storm. Jasmine is another excellent natural weapon for calming the nerves and it is one of the few essential oils that are capable of helping you to relax without inducing feelings of sleepiness. Rather than ingesting these two oils, put a couple of drops on a handkerchief and breathe them in deeply when you need relief or, alternatively, use a diffuser to fill your home or office with the delicious scent.

Conclusion

The world of essential oils is vast and homeopaths worldwide will testify to the power of nature’s elixirs when used correctly, so the oils mentioned above are by no means the only oils you can use in conjunction with CBD. However, if you feel that you could benefit from taking an all-natural approach to your healing, then you will now have a good starting point from which you can begin to experiment with your own mixes of CBD and essential oils.

The ECS and Skin (How CBD Works Topically)

In a previous post, we discussed the internal workings of the endocannabinoid system. We discovered that we have cannabinoid receptors in the brain, nervous system, and immune system. The presence of these cannabinoid receptors partially explains why supplementing our routine with cannabinoids such as CBD can be beneficial.

What wasn’t discussed in our previous blog post is the advantage of applying cannabinoids externally. When applied topically, cannabinoids do not reach the bloodstream. This can leave questions on how CBD topicals can be of benefit. In this blog, we’ll discuss the role of the endocannabinoid system in the skin.

ECS-and-Skin_2

The Skin: A Dynamic Organ

To better understand the ECS and skin, we must first review the functions of the skin. In addition to acting as a protective barrier against the environment, the skin is a dynamic organ. It is a source of hormones, has its own immune system, and contains an abundance of sensory nerves.

The skin is made up of three layers. The outermost layer is the epidermis, which is formed by layers of cells called keratinocytes. The epidermis is waterproof and provides protection from environmental factors such as UV radiation, microbes, extreme temperature, allergens, and chemicals.

The next layer of skin—the dermis—is made of collagen and elastin fibers that give the skin strength and elasticity. The dermis houses several appendages: follicles that produce hair, sebaceous glands that supply sebum, and glands that secrete sweat. These appendages help to reinforce the skin’s waterproof barrier, regulate the body’s temperature, and produce hormones such as steroids and vitamin D.

The skin’s immune system is located in the dermis. Various immune cells live inside this layer of skin or enter the skin when danger is present. When necessary, all skin cell types assist the immune system in protecting and healing the skin.

The dermis also contains a dense network of nerve fibers that recognize many stimuli. For this reason, the skin is considered the largest sensory organ.

The final layer of the skin is the subcutis, which includes fat that acts as a fuel reserve, insulation, and cushion.

The ECS and Skin

Recent studies have found the existence of the endocannabinoid system in the skin. The main purpose of the ECS in the skin is to maintain the balance of skin cell functions such as reproduction, differentiation, and immune competence.

Several cell types in the epidermis, hair follicles, and sebaceous glands synthesize, or create, endocannabinoids such as anandamide and 2-AG. These compounds bind to the two major cannabinoid receptors—CB1 and CB2—which are present in nearly all skin cells.

Due to the high presence of cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoids affect all components of the skin and contribute to their proper functioning. As discussed previously, the skin is a complex organ that performs defense, immunity, and sensory functions. The following list illustrates the effects of the ECS on the skin.

Epidermis: endocannabinoids activate the cannabinoid receptors on epidermal cells to help regulate the epidermis’s defense barrier as well as suppress inflammation in the epidermis.

Immune Cells: The ECS controls the action of the skin’s immune and inflammatory system. Endocannabinoids have anti-inflammatory effects and the ECS only activates the immune system when it is needed.

Sebaceous Glands: a healthy level of cannabinoids leads to the proper functioning of sebaceous glands. When the glands secrete proper levels of lipid-containing sebum, it contributes to healthy skin.

Sensory Nerves: cannabinoid receptors are located on sensory nerve endings. When activated, the receptors can block the action of the structures. This can inhibit pain and suppress the sensation of itch.

How CBD Works Topically

The skin relies on the homeostasis of skin cell function. Just as taking CBD internally helps to maintain homeostasis, applying CBD topically controls the balance of skin cell function. Cannabinoids supplement the endocannabinoids that are created in the skin and mimic their action. CBD interacts with the cannabinoid receptors in the skin and shows potential in various therapeutic situations. We encourage you to research the many benefits of CBD for the skin.

Many use CBD topicals for muscle and joint relief. Those with localized concerns—such as in the knees, hands, and feet—find topicals beneficial. At Made by Hemp, we carry a line of CBD salves, lotions, patches, and facial care.

How to Use CBD Oil on Skin

In particular, inflamed or dry skin could reap many benefits from CBD oil. The most convenient method is using a CBD Patch, which can be left on the skin for 12 hours. Patches take away the hassle of re-applying CBD oil throughout the day, however, they target a specific area.

Topical concerns that spread across more than one general area may fair better with a CBD rub-on cream.
