Affirmations that will change your life

Here is a passage of affirmations by Marianne Williamson that really touched me. Take a moment to read and reflect on it and bring it into your heart.

“There can be no darkness where I provide the light.

Light is to darkness what love is to fear; in the absence of one, the other disappears. All the darkness in my life – the fears, neuroses, dysfunctions, and diseases – are not so much a thing as the absence of a thing. They represent not the presence of a problem but rather the absence of the Answer. And the Answer is love.

All fearful manifestations disappear in the presence of love.

Today I make a stand against darkness, knowing that love will save me from the painful delusions that occupy my mind.

As I myself surrender my mind to love, and dedicate myself to the Light of True Being, then love will cast out my fears and light will cast out all darkness.”

What to Buy in Whole Foods to Reduce Your Anxiety

While there is a ton of new studies that are starting to show that what you eat can have an effect on your anxiety, the real connection is between the food you eat and your brain. This means that when you eat certain foods, it has a calming effect on you that helps you to reduce your anxiety (the good foods). But at the same time, there are also foods that have a negative effect on your anxiety and actually make it worse (the bad foods).

While anybody can go online and find some foods that are supposedly going to help them reduce their anxiety, what foods can you go down to your local Whole Foods store and purchase today?

Here is a list of foods that you can buy from your local Whole Foods store to reduce your anxiety, and what to avoid buying, as it will only aggravate your anxiety.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

omega-3-300x210

Omega-3 fatty acids are one of the foods that you must have in your diet if you want to be healthy and happy. In fact, some will even say that Omega-3’s are brain food that will make your brain happy.

While most doctors prefer to prescribe you some type of medication to help treat your anxiety, the real answer is right in front of you; the food you eat. And when it comes to Omega-3 fatty acids, nothing can be better for your brain. So how does this relate to your anxiety?

When you lack certain nutrients (such as Omega-3 fatty acids), it will have a negative effect on your brain. In fact, it will disrupt your brain function and can even alter the chemistry and neurotransmitters in there as well. This is bad as it’s those neurotransmitters that control your mood, how you feel, and even your appetite.

But when you add Omega-3’s to your diet, you will be giving your brain the nutrition it needs while also reducing the symptoms of anxiety.

Some of the foods that you can add to your daily diet that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids and readily available at your local Whole Foods store include:

Probiotics

Not commonly known by most, probiotics are another food that will help to calm you. While probiotics are for your gut, your gut is extremely important in the production of several neurotransmitters that include dopamine, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), and serotonin.

In fact, recent research has shown that using probiotics can actually work to help you treat, and even prevent your symptoms of anxiousness.

The best ways to get more probiotics in your diet are to either take a probiotic supplement or eat/drink foods that are fermented. The process of fermentation encourages the good bacteria in your gut to grow and can help calm and prevent the symptoms of anxiety.

Foods that will help increase the number of probiotics in your gut that are readily available at Whole Foods include:

  • Sauerkraut
  • Kefir
  • Yogurt
  • Pickles

More Antioxidants

There is a reason that foods rich in antioxidants are considered to be superfoods; they help to prevent your feelings of anxiousness. Antioxidants have been proven to protect your brain against stress, which eventually leads to inflammation. This can and will eventually affect your neurotransmitter production. What this means is that when you are in a state of lower antioxidants, you will feel more anxious more easily.

fresh-spinach-300x200

In fact, studies have shown that when you follow a diet that is rich in antioxidant foods, it will help to treat your mood issues and make you feel better more often.

fres kale-300x184

Some of the antioxidant-rich foods that you should include in the daily diet that you can easily get from Whole Foods include:

  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Carrots
  • Squash
  • Fruits Rich In Vitamin C
  • Broccoli
  • Red Peppers
  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Avocado
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Almonds
  • Strawberries

These are the foods that are readily available at Whole Foods stores, and that is essential if you want to support your optimal brain function.

Refined Sugars And Processed Foods Are Bad

refined-sugar-300x126

When it comes to processed foods and sweets, it is no big secret that they are bad for you. But did you also know that they are bad for your mental health too? You see, it’s the sugars and refined carbohydrates that are going to cause your blood sugar to spike extremely high, followed by a huge sudden drop.

While this may not sound like it’s that bad, this drop in blood sugar levels has been linked to a higher risk for depression and mood swings.

As if that weren’t bad enough, fried foods and processed meats have also been linked to a drop in your mood, as well as inflammation and heart disease. All these symptoms are linked to mental health problems, as well as anxiety.

processed-food-300x121

While these types of foods are readily available at Whole Foods stores, your best plan of action is to steer clear of any fried foods, processed meats or refined sugars.

Instead, try to shop for the more complex carbohydrates such as the ones that are found in whole grains. These are directly linked to a lower rate of mental health conditions, as well as a lower rate of anxiety.

Alcohol Is A Major Downer

While alcohol is a natural depressant, it is even worse if you suffer from anxiety. While alcohol makes you feel ‘better’ initially, it goes hand in hand with anxiety. In fact, studies have shown that if you suffer from social anxiety, you are 4.5 times more likely to be more dependent on alcohol.

Avoid-Alcohol-Anxiety-300x171

Drinking alcohol may seem to calm you down, but what it does to your body is cause massive spikes and then dips in your blood sugar levels. On top of that, it also dehydrates you, impairs your brain’s ability to function, and causes even more anxious feelings than if you didn’t drink anything at all. It is a vicious cycle when it comes to alcohol.

When it comes to what you should buy from Whole Foods to reduce your anxiety, there are many good things that you can use to help your situation. But at the same time, there are also some foods that you should stay away from as they are only going to aggravate your anxiety symptoms.

Just be sure that you maintain a healthy diet and buy the good foods that are going to help lessen your anxiety symptoms when you are shopping at Whole Foods, and you will be fine.

5 Simple Ways to Relieve Stress: CBD can help!

In our modern, fast-paced world, stress is becoming a very common component in our everyday lives. It has become so common, in fact, that we no longer seem to notice stress until it has compounded into something bigger and has started affecting our health.
Stress hormones (a primary stress hormone like cortisol), are released into the body to trigger our “fight or flight” response. In dire situations, these hormones help elevate our energy supplies, increase the concentration of glucose in our blood, and even help our brain use glucose optimally for quicker decision making. However, long-term activation of the body’s stress system could cause a host of health problems — anxiety, depression, heart disease – to name a few. Therefore, it is important we learn of ways to relieve ourselves of stress.
Below are five simple ways to relieve stress:

1. CBD Oil

You’ve probably heard of CBD quite often this past year. There is good reason for that. Aside from its uses in alleviating the symptoms of epilepsy, it is also being used a natural means of reducing anxiety and a great way to relieve stress. This is because all mammals have an endocannabinoid system. This is a network of CBD receptors along our central nervous system. These receptors react to CBD by fixing imbalances, strengthening our immune system, and relieving symptoms of stress and anxiety. So a couple of drops of CBD oil every day might just be a great way to help relieve stress.

2. Meditation

meditation

If you are looking for a very cheap way of reducing stress without taking anything, meditation is the way to go. Meditation has been known to help ease stress and anxiety by focusing our attention to emptying our mind and breathing deeply. Not only will this help you relax, but it could also re-energize you to help you face the rest of your day with a bit more calm. If you find yourself stressed by too many meetings or an impending deadline, take a few minutes to center yourself, empty your mind of any thoughts, and breathe.

3. Exercise

Physical activity causes our body to release happy hormones like dopamine and serotonin. To people who have experienced what is called the “runner’s high”, this is actually the rush of endorphins released by your body as a response to running. Endorphins help our body reduce stress by helping our body overcome pain, and regulate our sleep. The stress hormone cortisol actually reduces the production of happy hormones in our body which will lead to more stress for us. Exercising would help build these hormones back up in our system.

4. Reduce caffeine

We all have a caffeine threshold. Caffeine is known to help keep us awake and give us that boost of much-needed energy, especially in the mornings when all we want is to go back to sleep. However, too much caffeine can contribute to anxiety which in turn causes stress. It could also cause heart palpitations, cold sweat, and some digestive upset when you take too much caffeine. So if you find yourself getting anxious after your second or third cup of coffee, it might be a good idea to skip that cup of joe and maybe have something with lower caffeine levels. Perhaps a nice low caffeine tea, or, dare we say, some decaf coffee?

5. Socialize

men women socializing

Spending time with friends and family is a great stress reliever. No matter how introverted and socially averse you are, there is always someone you prefer spending your time with. And for those of us who are extroverted, being with people is an energizing experience. Laughing and having an enjoyable time with the people you love will help you relax more, and forget about your woes. In women, spending time with family and children helps in releasing oxytocin, a natural stress reliever.

No matter your phase of life, stress is unavoidable. Keeping these five tips in mind will help you in managing or maybe even relieving stress. And in turn will help you enjoy life more, avoid health issues, and even develop a healthier relationship with yourself and with your social circle.

How cool is it to be nominated for a Blogger Recognition Award! I was so surprised that I was nominated.  Much gratitude to michelleonyourside to nominate me. As I read the nomination I realized how much time and effort was put into it. I really appreciate the time michelleonyourside puts into her blog. If you have a few minutes please stop by and enjoy! She helps you make sense out of healthcare.

The Rules

-Thanks to the blogger that nominated you.
-Write a post to show your award.
-Give a brief story of how your blog started.
-Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers.
-Select 15 other bloggers you want to give this award to.
-Comment on each blog and let them know you have nominated them and provide the link to the post you created.

My Why

I was a business analyst at a major aerospace corporation several years ago, then a stay-at-home mom for over 14 years.  When I got divorced, I worked temporary jobs then landed an Assistant Property Manager position. When I was laid off,  I had time to reflect.  I also had digestive issues (acid reflux).  I took several medications; however, none of them helped my reflux.  I looked into taking a holistic approach.  That is when I enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition where I learned about several dietary theories and applied some of them to my life. After graduating from IIN, I became a Certified Holistic Health Coach. I created my blog to share with others what I learned and my goal is that the content on my blog would help others and make a difference in their lives.

My Advise to the New Blogger

First, blog about what you love. When you blog about what you love, your content will come more easily.

Second, I learned that when you first began blogging, it is important to be consistent.  When I first started my blog, I was very inconsistent and life got in the way.  There were periods of time that I didn’t have time to blog.  Earlier this year, I took a stand, and decided to commit to blogging at least once a week.  However, I found that I wasn’t getting any followers.  So, I started blogging every day. It takes time to get started, so be patient and have fun.

7 Most Prescribed Drugs and Their Natural Alternative

How many of us have been prescribed some type of medication or know someone who is on medication? We don’t have to live in a medicated world; however, we choose to. We want the quick fix so we continue our poor lifestyle and dietary habits. It doesn’t have to be this way, but it is…because it does require work to live a healthy lifestyle!

The nitty-gritty of the matter is that we refuse to think about prevention because we re-actively commit to treating the symptoms instead of the cause of the underlying health problem.

Prescriptions for pain, cholesterol reduction, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, antacids, antidepressants, diabetes and antibiotics make up 100% of the most prescribed drugs.

Make a commitment to yourself or a family member right now and start incorporating some of these amazing foods into your diet.

Check out the top 7 most prescribed drugs and the best natural remedies.

1. HYDROCODONE (Acetaminophen/Vicodin/Oxycontin)

Use: For Pain

Currently the single most prescribed drug in the world. More doctors are getting huge payouts from pharmaceutical companies to promote these hydrocodone, especially generic drugs. They make up more than 20% of the top prescribed medications.

How it Works:

It is an orally psychoactive compound that works as a narcotic and analgesic. It is biotransformed by the liver into several metabolites. It is highly dependent on metabolism by the Cytochrome P450 pathway.

Natural Foods:

Ginger, turmeric, berries, cayenne pepper, celery/celery seeds, cherries, dark green veggies, walnuts.

2. STATINS (Generic versions of Lipitor/Zocor/Crestor)

Use: Reduction of LDL Cholesterol

Approximately 15% of the top prescribed medications are generic statins. A study published in January 2012 in the Archives of Internal Medicine linked statins to 48 percent increased risk for type-2 diabetes.

How it Works:

Statins artificially lower cholesterol levels by inhibiting a critical enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which plays a role in the production of cholesterol in the liver.

Natural Foods:

Nuts, spinach, apples, turmeric, cranberries, tomatoes, green tea, fatty fish, beans, alfalfa herb, capsicum fruit, garlic, psyllium, fenugreek seeds, butcher’s broom, licorice root, hawthorn berry.

3. LISINOPRIL (Prinivil/Zestril) AND NORVASC (Amlodipine)

Use: Reduction of High Blood Pressure

In combination, Lisinopril and Norvasc make up a whopping 23% of the top prescribed medications. This makes them the most prescribed generic medications (if combined) for cardiovascular disease and blood pressure. Individually, Lisinopril constitutes approximately 14% and Norvasc about 9%.

How it Works:

Lisinopril is typically used for the treatment of hypertension, congestive heart failure, and heart attacks. Norvasc is used for hypertension and angina. It accomplishes this by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle so it essentially interferes with the metabolism of calcium.

Natural Foods:

Any foods high in vitamin C (chili peppers, guavas, bell peppers, thyme, parsley, dark leafy greens, broccoli), any foods high in magnesium (chocolate, green leafy vegetables, Brazil nuts, almonds, cashews, blackstrap molasses, pumpkin and squash seeds, pine nuts, and black walnuts) and any foods high in potassium (mushrooms, bananas, dark green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, oranges and dates). Coconut oil/water and CoQ10 are also very effective for lowering blood pressure.

4. SYNTHROID (levothyroxine sodium)

Use: Hypothyroidism

A synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine, generic Synthroid makes up more than 11% of the top prescribed medications. It’s used to treat hypothyroidism. A related drug, dextrothyroxine (D-thyroxine) was used in the past as a treatment for elevated cholesterol but was taken off the market due to cardiac side-effects.

How it Works:

It replaces the thyroid hormone which is naturally occurring in the thyroid gland essentially halting natural production.

Natural Foods:

Any foods containing iodine such as seaweed, kelp, radish, parsley, fish, seafood, eggs, bananas, cranberries, strawberries, himalayan crystal salt. Also, copper, iron, selenium and zinc are essential in the production of thyroid hormones. Exercise a minimum of 20-30 minutes per day, enough to raise your heartbeat.

5. PRILOSEC (omeprazole/generic versions of Nexium)

Use: Antacid

A proton pump inhibitor which constitutes just over 8% of the top prescribed medications. Omeprazole is one of the most widely prescribed drugs for reflux disease (GERD) and ulcers internationally and is available over the counter in some countries.

How it Works:

It suppresses gastric acid secretion by specific inhibition of the gastric acid ions in cells. The absorption of omeprazole takes place in the small intestine essentially turning off the switch which promotes healthy digestion of foods. Omeprazole is also completely metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system.

Natural Foods:

Grapefruits, probiotics, broccoli sprouts, manuka honey, mastic gum, marshmallow tea, glutamine, slippery elm, deglycyrrhized liquorice (DGL), aloe vera juice, baking soda, pickle juice.

6. AZITHROMYCIN AND AMOXICILLIN

Use: Antibiotic

In combination, azithromycin and amoxicillin contribute towards a whopping 17% of the top prescribed medications. And we wonder why we have antibiotic resistance! On their own, each contributes about 8.5%. Azithromycin is one of the best-selling antibiotics and derived from erythromycin. Amoxicillin is usually the drug of choice for children.

How it Works:

It inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls and interfering with their protein synthesis. These drugs also inhibit the protein synthesis of good bacteria needed for immunity and proper digestion.

Natural Foods:

Sunlight (Vitamin D), garlic, coconut oil, turmeric, foods high in nicotinamide (Vitamin B3) such as salmon, sardines and nuts. Also manuka honey, olive leaf extract, green tea, pau D’Arco, rose water, myrrh, grapeseed extract, golden seal, oregon grapes, oregano oil, and probiotics.

7. GLUCOPHAGE (metformin)

Use: Oral anti-diabetic drug

Glucophage drugs makes the top 7 but the prescription rate of this drug is rapidly increasing. It makes up about 7% of the top prescribed medications. It is the first-line drug of choice for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is used in overweight and obese people. It also acts to indirectly lower LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

How it Works:

By suppressing natural glucose production by the liver, the drug activates an enzyme which plays an important role in insulin signaling, whole body energy balance, and the metabolism of glucose and fats.

Natural Foods:

Black tea, sunlight (Vitamin D), turmeric, nuts, chia seeds, green leafy vegetables, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, red grapes, steel cut oatmeal, broccoli, spinach, green beans and strawberries. 90% of all cases of diabetes can be resolved by eating foods with a low glycemic load, with both weight training and aerobic exercise.

Time to Make Self-Care a Priority: Here’s How

There’s a common belief to do for others first and to do for yourself last. While this belief is certainly encouraging you to be positive and helpful to those around you, you also deserve self-care, and it’s a priority! It’s time to take care of your needs, and of course, help others when you can after your needs have been met.

You will succeed when you are feeling your  best. Moreover, you thrive when you are happy, stress-free, and living the life you love. Without self-care, you are neglecting the needs your body requires to be a successful and happy individual productive to yourself and the world around you.

self-care

Sleep is a priority that is often times overlooked when comparing it to the tasks of day-to-day life. It’s time that sleep is prioritized and you enjoy 7-9 hours of undisturbed sleep every night! While you sleep, your body repairs blood vessels and organs that have been damaged or stressed throughout the day. Your brain uses this time to sort through and store information, and  your body balances its’ self out. Make the first step to self-care and head to bed an hour or two earlier! Your body will thank you!

Eat clean! Your body relies on fuel to function. Eating organic, whole and plentiful foods rich with vitamins will not only keep your organs running smoothly, but you will feel healthier overall. Food is fuel, and not all food is equal. Choosing organic produce ensures you are eliminating the introduction of pesticides and chemicals into your body that certainly doesn’t belong there. Unnatural hormones in the foods will create an imbalance in your own bodily systems and functions. Pesticides in the foods have been linked to cancer and other diseases including obesity.

Take at least 1 hour a day to yourself. This doesn’t mean sitting on the couch while finishing an essay assignment or grading papers for your high school students. This means an hour of undisturbed time where you are enjoying something that benefits yourself. This can be meditation, yoga, a gym session, a walk along the beach, an art class, or another hobby! Make sure “you-time” is a priority. When you are drowning in the demands of daily life and push your own needs to the side, self-care has become the last priority. To live a healthy life, self-care must be a priority! Just one hour a day can reflect big changes in your life!

Ensuring you are making yourself a priority is essential to your overall health and well-being! Follow these tips to get yourself started in the right direction to a happier life. Self-care isn’t selfish- it’s one of the most important things you can do to keep yourself healthier and happier than you’ve ever been!
